If you are not satisfied with the typical layout or want to make several from one room, it is not necessary to build blank walls and start a long approval process. Instead, you can use decorative partitions for zoning – they will help to delimit the room without overloading the space. In this article, we tell you what dividing structures exist and show photos of cool ideas for different rooms.

Among the decorative partitions for zoning, rails are the most common type. The system is assembled from narrow and long bars, which are parallel to each other. Mounted on a horizontal frame of bars and guides. If the height is large, and the details themselves are thin, another horizontal bar is laid in the middle to strengthen the entire structure. Rack dividers can be removable (special hidden fasteners are screwed to the ceiling and floor, on which the rack is installed at an angle) and static.
Pros of rails
Do not overload the space.
Easy to install.
Suitable for all rooms and styles.
Eco-friendly.
You can choose the natural texture of wood or paint in any color.

Shelving
The rack combines the functions of furniture and a structural element. It turns out two in one: a storage system and a decorative partition for zoning a room. If the product does not have a back wall, it looks like a lightweight construction that allows light and air to pass through.
The rack can be moved at any time, as well as change the look of the room depending on what is stored in it: for example, add coziness to the interior with potted plants, put a beautiful service on open shelves or place your favorite books in beautiful covers.

Sliding structures
If the mobility of the layout is important, sliding structures are best suited for this task. Such systems consist of wings that move along the upper and lower skids – it turns out an analogue of a sliding interior door. With the help of such a system, it is possible at any time to turn a room from a single open space into several closed zones and vice versa.
Most often, the canvases are made transparent or translucent, which allows you to isolate a certain area, while not blocking the access of light and air. They are made mainly of metal, plastic, glass and wood in various combinations.

Partition
A more radical option is a solid false wall. This is a blank construction, as similar as possible to a real wall through which light does not pass. Of the important advantages – it also does not let sounds and smells through, therefore it is often used in the kitchen-living room.
They make piers from drywall, wood, brick or glass blocks. Structurally, they can adjoin a perpendicular wall or be located separately – for example, in the center of a room. Fastening in this case will be to the floor and ceiling.

Screen
The most mobile type is the screen. As a rule, it consists of several screens connected by a movable mechanism, but there are also static structures. This is a lightweight and compact divider that can be used to zone a room in different ways depending on the task. It is made of wood, MDF, plastic, metal, sometimes glass inserts are used. Suitable for any style, it fits especially well in eco- and eclectic interiors with ethnic motifs – for example, Chinese or Japanese.

Curtain
If you only need a visual distinction, you can use a lightweight option – a regular fabric curtain. Depending on the style of the room and the purpose, it can be made of dense opaque fabric or vice versa – for example, from tulle or organza.
This type of zoning is suitable for small studios or odnushki, where 1-2 people live and it is important to relieve the space as much as possible. The main advantages of this solution are: lightness, mobility and cost-effectiveness – compared to solid structures, a fabric sheet costs much less.

materials
Dividers can be made from various materials.
tree. Wood is eco-friendly, hypoallergenic, durable. In addition, it looks noble in any environment, fits into all styles and immediately makes the interior more comfortable. Of the minuses – it is relatively expensive and is afraid of water, so it is suitable for residential premises with normal humidity (nursery, bedroom, living room, hallway). You can use it in the kitchen, but in this case the product must be additionally coated with a protective water-repellent varnish. It is used for laths, false walls and figured carved partitions.
MDF. Analogue of natural wood. Not so durable, but it costs less and can take any form – not only slats or piers are made from this material, but also complex openwork dividers.
Drywall. Decorative partitions made of plasterboard for zoning are good for their insulating characteristics. Building material is made from a mixture of gypsum, paper and binders. As a result, light but strong sheets are formed that do not let light, air and even noise through if the design includes a soundproof layer. GKLV is suitable for the kitchen – a special type of drywall that is not afraid of moisture.
Glass. A beautiful and elegant option for minimalism, neoclassicism, and any style. If the main plus is aesthetics, then the obvious disadvantage is the fragility of glass. A durable metal frame and special impact-resistant glass will make such a partition more reliable.
Metal. It is used both in tandem with glass blocks and independently. Welded structures are chosen as an analogue of rack dividers in modern and loft interiors. The material is strong and durable, not afraid of mechanical stress.
Plastic. Inexpensive material for budget repairs – you can make a simple rack, screen or sliding panel out of it, replacing fragile glass. Manufacturers offer a wide range of colors. Not afraid of water and detergents, suitable for kitchen and bathroom.

Photo of decorative partitions for zoning a room
Kitchen-living room
Most often, it is the kitchen and living room that are used as a single space. At the same time, the concept of open space does not always work: the kitchen may need to be isolated during cooking so as not to disturb family members with the smell of food and noise, or to isolate a recreation area or work area. Here you will need decorative partitions for zoning space. You can share a kitchen with a dining group and a hall; cooking area and dining group in the living room; place for rest and work.
It is easy to draw boundaries in the room with the help of any type of partitions. A common choice is wooden slats. If you want the layout to be mobile, use sliding structures or portable screens. For maximum insulation, false walls made of drywall, artificial brick or glass blocks are suitable.

Bedroom
Usually the bedroom is a single room with one function – rest and recuperation. But small apartments require multifunctionality: often a makeup corner, a mini-study or a small dressing room to store all the clothes are added here. In order not to overload the interior, these areas can be separated from the place to sleep using light rails, open shelving or glass structures.

Often in a studio or one-room apartment, in principle, there is no separate sleeping area – you can organize a separate sleeping place using floor-to-ceiling sliding systems made of glass and metal. An additional level of privacy will be created by curtains that are hung from the inside and closed for the duration of the rest.

Children’s
Unlike an adult bedroom, a nursery should perform many functions at once, regardless of size: it needs to fit a sleeping place, a playroom, a work area, and most often also a place for creativity or sports. Also, it is not uncommon for two or even three children to live in the same room – for each you need to allocate your own part.
Dividers help to distinguish between different functional areas or isolate a place for each of the children. For a nursery, slats or shelving are best suited: decorative partitions for zoning made of timber are safe for kids, and in the second case, additional storage can be arranged. Choosing glass for a nursery is not recommended for safety reasons – the material is likely to break sooner or later, and the child may get hurt.

Hallway
Inside the hallway itself, partitions are used infrequently – the entrance area is almost always small in size and does not require functional separation. But separators are useful if you want to abandon a set of small isolated rooms in favor of a single space.
So, for example, the entrance hall and the corridor can be separated from the residential part of the apartment using wooden slats or transparent sliding systems. This will mark the boundaries, and the entrance group will seem more spacious and lighter – the absence of load-bearing walls will let in natural light from the living room or kitchen with a window.
